When I first saw this I assumed it to be a joke, but it was officially announced on Thursday (today) 13th September that eBay have re-branded their logo design after 17 years of the old version. Keeping the iconic colours from the original, the logotype has been heavily simplified freeing up the form a little. However, I feel it loses it’s personality, falling into the corporate logotype style.
“The eBay logo is known the world over, so changing it was not a decision made lightly. The time felt right,” Wenig, president of eBay Global Marketplaces, wrote in an email to employees.
I’m curious as to how this changes the feel and aesthetic of the site – presumably not only the logo will see changes over the next few months?
What do you think? Is the simplification a worthy attempt at a re-brand in this case, or is it taking it too far?
